AI Interviewing

The use of artificial intelligence to conduct, evaluate, or assist in job interviews, including video analysis, speech analysis, and automated question generation.

What Is AI Interviewing?

AI interviewing encompasses a range of technologies that apply artificial intelligence to the interview process. This includes asynchronous video interviews analyzed by AI (where candidates record responses and algorithms evaluate them), live interview assistants that suggest questions or evaluate responses in real time, AI-powered chatbot interviews for initial screening, and automated interview scheduling with predictive matching. AI interviewing tools raise significant bias concerns because they often evaluate subjective qualities — communication style, body language, facial expressions, vocal tone — that can correlate with protected characteristics. Research has shown that facial analysis algorithms perform differently across racial groups, that speech analysis can disadvantage non-native speakers and people with speech disabilities, and that AI evaluation of "cultural fit" or "enthusiasm" can encode demographic preferences from training data. Under the EU AI Act, AI interviewing tools are explicitly classified as high-risk. Under NYC LL144, AI interviewing tools that substantially assist or replace human decision-making qualify as AEDTs requiring annual bias audits.
