Intersectional Bias
Discrimination that occurs at the intersection of multiple protected characteristics, such as race and gender combined.
What Is Intersectional Bias?
Intersectional bias refers to unique patterns of discrimination experienced by individuals who belong to multiple protected groups simultaneously. For example, an AI hiring tool might not show bias against women overall or against Black candidates overall, but might significantly disadvantage Black women specifically. Standard bias auditing approaches that examine one protected characteristic at a time can miss intersectional bias. Advanced auditing, like OnHirely's intersectional analysis, examines outcomes for combinations of protected characteristics to identify these hidden patterns of discrimination.
